We go back a long way, the former Commander Magnus and I. Right the way back to the start of this ‘ere blog, as I may have mentioned once or twice, and indeed to before then. We spent some time together – a wild, experimental time, when we were still trying to work out what the future held. And, I admit, we drifted apart for a while – money was involved, and mistakes were made. We’ve been seeing rather a lot of each other lately, though, and I might just about be ready to say we’re back together.
I’ve been playing Magnus the Warlord week in, week out for the Slow Grow League up at Dark Sphere, and doing quite well, troubling the top three despite a second week in which I lost the ability to gauge threat ranges, charge lanes or indeed anything that might keep Magnus alive for more than two turns.

We decided to skip terrain making this week, in favour of actually playing some games (especially since Shiny’s damn near finished his battlegroup: it looks SMASHING, as good as one would expect from a Proper Artist, and I’m going to make him take some decent photos of it sooner or later). There’d be proper battle reports, but the camera packed up within about half a turn of starting our first game.

Second Renegade. This one was meant to be much plainer than the others, a logging ‘jack which Magnus has converted into a warjack by bolting armour plates, an arc node and an Obliterator rocket onto; that’s why it’s mostly metal with only a few blue plates. Mostly done in Citadel metallics, Vallejo Stormy Blue for the armour and those gorgeous Citadel Inks (Asurmen Blue, mix of Gryphonne Sepia and Badab Black for the metal, Devlan Mud over everything) to finish. Shiny reckons his eyes and furnace need redoing for that crucial pop and I’m pretty sure he’s right.
Lord Tyrant Hexeris. He’s a test model for the army I’m thinking about doing for Hordes when the second edition comes out (based on the logic that Skorne have the same cruel, not-even-in-death-does-your-servitude-end ethos as my Cryx, even some of the same tokens, but a very different playstyle. I’m not sure how he’s come out. On the one hand he was surprisingly simple for a fiddly Skorne model (that filigree is not easy, although it’s still miles easier than Trollblood tartan). On the other hand, the red and the bronze aren’t too distinct from one another (it’s not quite as bad as the photo makes it look, but it is a touch on the blurred side). Hark maintains that makes him look more sandblown. I’m not convinced.
He’s primed red (car primer), with a Citadel Dwarf Bronze trim, Citadel Chainmail weapons, Vallejo Sombre Grey cloth, Vallejo Bonewhite spikes and trophies, and Vallejo Dead Flesh skin. Citadel Ogryn Flesh ink over the skin, Gryphonne Sepia over the bone, Badab Black/Ogryn Flesh over the cloth (it’s all meant to be Titan-hide) and Baal Red over the armour. I’d been planning to do a Gryphonne Sepia ink over the trim and Baal Red the recesses but frankly it just wasn’t going to happen on the day.
If the army turns out to be not-fail and if I can manage to perfect the paint scheme, expect the Beasts from the East to make a showing in the New Year. If not, then it’s Cryx all the way down…
